Indonesia Prepares for Crucial Match Against Bahrain in World Cup Qualifiers
SEAToday.com, Jakarta - Indonesia is gearing up for an important showdown against Bahrain in the third round of the 2026 Asian Zone World Cup Qualifiers. The match, scheduled to take place on Thursday,(10/10/2024), at Bahrain National Stadium, is a crucial test for the Garuda squad.
Indonesia currently sits in fourth place in Group C with two points, while Bahrain holds third place with four points.
The Garuda squad, coached by Shin Tae-yong, is looking to improve its standing in the group. The gap between the two teams is evident, with Indonesia ranked 129th in FIFA rankings and Bahrain much higher at 76th.
Despite the ranking difference, Indonesia remains optimistic, with many players currently playing abroad, adding international experience to the team.
Historically, the head-to-head record between Indonesia and Bahrain has been evenly matched, with two wins each and two draws in their seven previous meetings.
Indonesia’s most notable victory came in 2007 when they won 2-1 in the AFC Asian Cup, a tournament held in Jakarta. However, Indonesia’s last encounter with Bahrain in 2012 resulted in a devastating 10-0 loss, marking the country's largest defeat in football history.
Shin Tae-yong remains focused on preparing his team for the upcoming challenge. Reflecting on the past, the coach emphasized the importance of using the team's current international experience and growth to avoid a repeat of the 2012 defeat.
"We know Bahrain is a strong opponent, but we are confident in our team’s abilities and will fight hard," said Shin Tae-yong.
The stakes are high for both teams. A win for Indonesia would improve their position in Group C and boost their chances of progressing in the qualifiers.
Bahrain, on the other hand, aims to solidify their standing and close the gap to the top teams in the group. With the pressure mounting, both teams are expected to deliver an intense and exciting match.
