Indonesia Set to Face Bahrain Amid Memories of Past Defeat
SEAToday.com, Jakarta - Indonesia will face Bahrain in the third matchday of the 2026 World Cup AFC qualifiers in Riffa on Thursday, (10/10). This upcoming clash carries emotional weight for Indonesia, as it brings back memories of a humiliating 10-0 defeat in the same venue 12 years ago.
Head coach Shin Tae-yong(STY) was taken aback when he was reminded of this past result, visibly shocked upon hearing the news. However, his focus remains firmly on the upcoming match, not the past.
STY made it clear that he is not concerned with seeking revenge for the 2012 loss. “Rather than focusing on revenge, it’s better that we concentrate on our game—on how we want to win with the style of play we prefer,” said Shin during a press conference, as cited by goal.com.
This upcoming match marks the first meeting between Indonesia and Bahrain since that devastating loss in the 2014 World Cup qualifiers. Back then, Indonesia was plagued by internal issues, including leadership conflicts within the Indonesian Football Association (PSSI).
To make matters worse, key players were absent, and the squad had eight debutants. The situation was further aggravated when goalkeeper Samsidar received a red card just five minutes into the match, sparking a FIFA investigation into possible foul play due to the unusual circumstances.
Despite the historical context, STY has been cautious in his approach to the team’s preparations. He revealed that he has not yet fully implemented his tactical strategies, as some players only recently joined the squad.
“Training so far has been more about maintaining fitness, and yesterday (Monday), there was a bit of tactical training. We will balance fitness work with tactical sessions in the days ahead,” Shin explained.
Looking ahead to the match, STY’s emphasis on playing their own game and focusing on their strengths signals Indonesia’s intent to leave behind the painful memories of 2012. His clear-headed focus on the team's development, coupled with an understanding of Bahrain's capabilities, is central to Indonesia’s strategy moving forward.
