Indonesia Climbs Four Spots in FIFA Rankings, Erick Thohir Praises Team's Progress
SEAToday.com, Jakarta - Indonesia’s national football team has risen four spots in the FIFA rankings, now sitting at 129th. This jump follows their impressive performances, including draws against World Cup regulars Saudi Arabia and Australia in the third round of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. According to PSSI Chairman Erick Thohir (ET), this improvement highlights the team's hard work and dedication.
“We earned two draws against tough teams, which is proof of our seriousness in advancing Indonesian football,” said Erick, as cited by AntaraNews. He emphasized that these results demonstrate PSSI's commitment to making Garuda soar higher on the global stage.
Despite the progress, Erick urged the team not to become complacent. He stated that Indonesia's goal remains breaking into the top 100 FIFA rankings. “It’s not enough yet because our dream is to see Garuda among the world’s top 100,” Erick added.
Indonesia’s next matches in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers will take place in October. They will play Bahrain away on October 10, followed by a match against China on October 15. These games are crucial for maintaining their upward momentum.
The FIFA rankings are currently topped by Argentina, with France and Spain following close behind. In Asia, Japan leads the region, ranked 16th globally, while Indonesia continues to outpace Southeast Asian neighbors like Malaysia and Singapore.
