SEAToday.com, Jakarta - Erick Thohir, Chairman of PSSI, emphasized on (12/17/2024), that he would not force Ivar Jenner and Justin Hubner to join Indonesia's national team for the 2024 ASEAN Cup.

“I’ve never imposed any player to join,” Erick stated after the PSSI Partner Summit in Jakarta as quoted from Antara.

Both players were unable to participate since the ASEAN Cup is not part of the FIFA calendar. As a result, their respective clubs—Jong Utrecht and Wolverhampton Wanderers U-21—did not release them for the tournament. Erick remained calm, viewing this as an opportunity to develop local talent.

“This is a priority to elevate players from our domestic league,” said the 54-year-old, referring to the majority of local players chosen by Shin Tae-yong. From 24 names, only five play abroad, including Pratama Arhan and Marselino Ferdinan.

Erick stressed that the door remains open for overseas players willing to join but added that clubs’ decisions must be respected. “Players have fatigue, injuries, and careers to focus on,” he said, highlighting the need to protect their professional journeys.

“We can’t force them—they don’t earn from us,” Erick concluded. Respecting players’ commitments, he argued, ensures sustainable careers and harmony with international clubs.
