SEAToday.com, Jakarta - Indonesia kicked off the AFF Cup 2024 with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Myanmar on Monday night, (12/9/2024), in Yangon. The decisive goal came in the 76th minute from team captain Asnawi Mangkualam, who entered as a substitute in the second half.

"Alhamdulillah, we secured three points in the opening match, which is always challenging," said PSSI Chairman Erick Thohir as quoted from PSSI official website. He highlighted the significance of this win, especially with Indonesia fielding a squad dominated by players under 22 years old.

The first half saw Indonesia struggle to break Myanmar’s defense, with the home team threatening on several occasions. Goalkeeper Cahya Supriadi’s stellar saves kept the scoreline intact, paving the way for a stronger second half after three key substitutions.

Coach Shin Tae-yong’s changes paid off as the team found its rhythm. Asnawi capitalized on a loose ball in the penalty area, with his strike deflecting off the goalkeeper and the crossbar before rolling in as an own goal.

Indonesia will host Laos in their second Group B match on Thursday, December 12, 2024, at Manahan Stadium, Solo. With Laos coming off a 1-4 loss to Vietnam, the Garuda squad aims to maintain their momentum in this Southeast Asian tournament.
