PSSI Chairman Erick Thohir's Hopes for Kevin Diks Ahead of Potential Japan Match
SEAToday.com, Jakarta - Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) Chairman Erick Thohir expressed optimism about Kevin Diks' impact on the national team's defense as they prepare to face formidable opponents.
"The hope is, of course, that with Kevin Diks, Indonesia's defense will become even tougher. With his experience playing in the Champions League, there’s no doubt about his capability," said Thohir.
As Indonesia aims for a spot in the 2026 World Cup, the national team faces a critical test with two home matches at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium (SUGBK).
Jay Idzes and the team will play Japan, Asia’s highest-ranked squad, on November 15, followed by a match against Saudi Arabia on November 19.
The Indonesian national team themselves is in fifth place, while Japan leads Group C with 10 points from five matches. The Garuda need to finish at least in fourth place so they can advance to the fourth round of the World Cup 2026 Asian Qualifiers.
After Japan, the Indonesia national team must face Saudi Arabia (19 November), Bahrain (25 March 2025), and China (5 June 2025). Those matches will be played in Gelora Bung Karno Stadium.
In their last match, Indonesia must go to Japan on 10th June 2024.
