Messi menjadi salah satu nama dalam daftar 19 tokoh yang menerima penghargaan sipil tertinggi dari Amerika Serikat tersebut. Para tokoh ini dinilai telah memberikan kontribusi luar biasa bagi negara mereka dan dunia.
Melansir laman Gedung Putih, Messi selain menjadi pesepakbola paling berprestasi, juga turut mendukung program kesehatan dan edukasi anak di seluruh dunia lewat Leo Messi Foundation dan menjabat sebagai Duta Besar UNICEF.
Selain Messi, sejumlah tokoh yang juga menerima penghargaan ini adalah Hillary Clinton, penyanyi legendaris Bono, legenda basket Earvin "Magic" Johnson, serta editor mode Anna Wintour.
